Kate Wilhelm (8 de junho de 1928 – 8 de março de 2018) foi uma escritora estadunidense. Ela escreveu romances e contos nos gêneros de ficção científica, mistério e suspense, incluindo a obra Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang, vencedora do Prêmio Hugo. Wilhelm fundou o Clarion Workshop juntamente com seu marido, Damon Knight, e o escritor Robin Scott Wilson.
Trajetória Katie Gertrude Meredith nasceu em Toledo, Ohio, filha de Jesse e Ann Meredith. Ela concluiu o ensino médio em Louisville, Kentucky, e trabalhou como modelo, telefonista, balconista, operadora de central telefônica e analista de riscos em uma companhia de seguros.
Casou-se com Joseph Wilhelm em 1947 com quem teve dois filhos. O casal se divorciou em 1962, e em 1963 ela casou-se com Damon Knight, com quem teve quatro filhos. O casal viveu em Eugene, Oregon, até a morte dele em 2002, e Kate Wilhelm permaneceu lá até sua própria morte, em 2018.
Carreira Sua primeira obra de ficção publicado foi "The Pint-Size Genie", na edição de outubro de 1956 da revista Fantastic, editada por Paul W. Fairman (com a assistência de Cele Goldsmith, responsável pela análise de originais enviados espontaneamente à publicação). No ano seguinte, seu primeiro conto aceito, "The Mile-Long Spaceship", foi publicado na revista Astounding Science Fiction, de John W. Campbell, e dez de seus contos de ficção especulativa foram publicados ao longo de 1958 e 1959. Seu romance de estreia foi uma história de mistério e assassinato, More Bitter Than Death (Simon & Schuster, 1963), e sua estreia na ficção científica, o romance The Clone (1965) — escrito em parceria com Theodore L. Thomas —, foi finalista do prêmio anual Nebula.
Seus trabalhos foram publicados em Quark/, Orbit, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Locus, Amazing Stories, Asimov's Science Fiction, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Fantastic, Omni, Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, Redbook e Cosmopolitan.
Ela e seu segundo marido, Damon Knight, orientaram muitos autores e ajudaram a fundar o Clarion Writers Workshop e o Milford Writer's Workshop. Após a morte dele, em 2002, Wilhelm continuou a organizar oficinas mensais e a ministrar palestras em outros eventos até o seu falecimento.
